A weekend dust-up on Richmond Row that brought police swooping down ended with a teenager charged with multiple counts of assault, including against police.

The Sunday night dramatics began with an argument and the assault of a 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman near Richmond and Albert Streets around 9:30 p.m.

Andrew Benyia, who was eating at the Barakat Restaurant at that corner, said he saw what unfolded.

“I went outside and I could see a guy punching on a woman and another guy trying to restrain the guy beating the girl up,” Benyia said. “Police officers showed up shortly after that.”

Police said they were flagged down and used a Taser to subdue a suspect.

“(The police officer) tried to restrain the guy that was beating on the woman and this guy was absolutely vicious. He started beating the cop up pretty good. A couple other guys got involved,” Benyia said.

“Five seconds go by, and the guy gets up and starts swinging at the cop as if (the taser) had no effect, Mr. Invincible-style, so then the fight keeps going and after a few seconds he boots it down the street and takes off,” Benyia said.

The suspect fled north on Richmond toward Central Avenue. Another witness said he ran into their car. About 10 London police vehicles lined Central Avenue on the north end of Victoria Park.

The suspect was apprehended about at 10:15 p.m. by “numerous officers,” police said.

A 16-year-old male is charged with two counts of assault, two of assaulting police, uttering threats and resisting arrest.
