Asda staff are “hanging their heads” in shame after Isle of Wight was misspelled on 10,000 special bags produced for the first store on the island.

The bags, which were available for shoppers to buy, included the spelling “Isle of White” as part of the store’s address details.

Though the bags were designed by two island children, the “silly mistake” was not part of the children’s drawing.

Staff at the chain were embarrassed, with a spokeswoman for Asda telling the BBC: “We’re hanging our heads for making such a silly mistake on our bags for life for our new Isle of Wight store.”

10,000 of the bags with the spelling error were produced (Isle of Wight Radio (iwradio.co.uk))

Asda faced ridicule on social media for the blunder.

Isle of Wight Radio tweeted “Isle of What?”

While others used the hashtag #RetailFail

A spokeswoman added: “This was a genuine printing error and we’re in the process of reproducing the exclusive design to get back on sale as quickly as possible.”
