A man has moved out of the east-end home where his girlfriend was critically injured in an attack last week, telling neighbours he can’t bear to live there any longer.

Emergency crews called to 1070 Frances St. on July 31 found a woman with life-threatening injures. The woman, who hasn’t been identified, was listed in critical but stable condition in hospital Wednesday, police said.

The single-storey house where the attack occurred is located just east of Western Fair. The man who lives there returned recently to collect his belongings, neighbours said Wednesday.

“He says he can’t live there anymore,” said one neighbour, who asked his name not be published.

The man, who has rented the home for the past year, visits his girlfriend in the hospital every day, the neighbour added.

Bags of garbage and discarded household items littered the outside of the pink-sided house Wednesday.

The unkempt residence always had a steady stream of visitors, including the man now charged in last week’s attack, neighbours said.

Dennis George, 46, of London, is charged with attempted murder.

One neighbour reported seeing George at the home just hours before dozens of police swooped in on the east-end street.

Investigators held the crime scene for four days.

George has a long criminal past, including a 2008 manslaughter conviction.

While serving a sentence at the Joyceville Institution in Kingston for robberies, George stabbed fellow inmate LeRoy Paupst, 47, to death on New Year’s Day 2005. Paupst was nearing the end of his five-year sentence for sex crimes against women and girls in St. Thomas between 1986 and 1998.

George confessed to the killing two months later at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre, where he was being held on an unrelated harassment charge after his release from the Kingston prison. He was sentenced to six years in prison for the jailhouse killing.
