Witnesses have described the horrific scenes as a van ploughed into pedestrians in a suspected terror attack in Barcelona.

Thirteen people are feared dead and at least 20 people have been injured as a white van mounted the pavement in the busy shopping street Las Ramblas.

Eyewitnesses told of how they could hear people screaming as they ran from the scene, with others saying they have taken cover in nearby shops.

Brendon Sissing said he saw people “screaming and people being knocked down by this van” in the tourist hotspot on Thursday afternoon.

He told LBC: “It must have been doing 80km, 100km per hour. I just heard people screaming. I looked to my left and saw people being knocked down by this van.

He added: “It knocked into a whole bunch of people… and just kept going.”

Another witness told how police told him a suspect was on foot in the area, adding that he has taken cover in a church near the scene amid the chaos.

Ethan Spibey wrote on Twitter: “Told there’s a hostage situation nearby and suspect is on foot. Church providing food and water to some visibly shaken locals and tourists.”

“Been locked in a church near Las Ramblas, police say suspect is on foot in area. Jeeze, this is scary.”

Aamer Anwar was walking in the street, which he said was “jam-packed with tourists” at the time of the attack.

He told Sky News: “All of a sudden, I just sort of heard a crashing noise and the whole street just started to run, screaming. I saw a woman right next to me screaming for her kids.

“Police were very, very quickly there, police officers with guns, batons, everywhere. Then the whole street started getting pushed back.”

Emergency services had urged people to avoid Placa Catalunya while the city’s train and Metro stations were shut down.

Dramatic images posted on social media showed armed police swarm the area popular with holidaymakers.
