Dozens of firefighters were called to a massive blaze in a west London flat.

Two apartments were gutted after flames ripped through the Bayswater townhouse in Kensington Gardens Square on Saturday evening, the London Fire Brigade said.

A spokesman said: “Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers have been called to a flat fire on Kensington Gardens Square in Bayswater. A turntable ladder is also being used to tackle the blaze.

“The fire gutted two flats – one on the third floor and one on the fourth floor of the converted five storey mid-terraced town house. Eight people left the property before the Brigade arrived.

“Smoke from the fire was very visible in its early stages and the Brigade’s ‘999’ Control officers took around 20 emergency calls from members of the public.”

Firefighters were called at 6.50pm and the cause of the blaze remains unknown, he added.
