After suffering from years of draught, the Dead Sea is facing an “environmental disaster in slow motion”.

Scientists are warning the sea level is falling by as much as 1.5m (5ft) per year – meaning it could be a tiny pool by the middle of the century.

The crisis has seen sinkholes open up and resorts close in what is currently a popular tourist attraction.

Growing populations in the area also mean there is competition for water resources.

Dr Ofir Katz, an ecologist at the Dead Sea and Arava Science Center, offered a word of caution: “We need to take care of nature or else we all sink with it.”
