A Tory MP has allegedly described leaving the EU without a deal as the “real n***** in the woodpile”.

Anne Marie Morris, MP for Newton Abbot, reportedly made the controversial remark at a meeting of eurosceptics in central London on Monday.

The 60-year-old, who studied at Oxford University, claimed just 7 per cent of financial services in the UK would be affected by Brexit.

In a recording published by the Huffington Post, she then appears to say: “Now I’m sure there will be many people who’ll challenge that, but my response and my request is look at the detail, it isn’t all doom and gloom.

“Now we get to the real n***** in the woodpile which is in two years what happens if there is no deal?”

The controversial phrase is an American figure of speech meaning some point of high importance which is not disclosed. It was commonly used over a century ago.

The office of Ms Morris has not responded to the Standard’s request for comment.
