Brexit may never happen because of the “enormous” scale of the problems it will throw up, Sir Vince Cable has said.
The frontrunner to be the next Liberal Democrat leader cited divisions within the Conservative and Labour parties as reasons withdrawal from the EU might not go ahead.
He also said a deteriorating economy could make people think again despite last year’s vote to leave the EU.
“I’m beginning to think that Brexit may never happen,” Sir Vince told the BBC.
“I think the problems are so enormous, the divisions within the two major parties are so enormous… I can see a scenario in which this doesn’t happen.”
Sir Vince, who served as Business Secretary from 2010 to 2015, added: “People will realise that we didn’t vote to be poorer, and I think the whole question of continued membership will once again arise.”
The Lib Dems made a second referendum on the terms of a deal on Brexit one of the manifesto promises in the election, when Sir Vince won back his seat of Twickenham.
He is now tipped as the most likely person to take over from Tim Farron, who announced his resignation after June’s election.
