Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay says MPs have to ‘respect the role of speaker’ after a ruling on new vote placed another obstacle in front of Theresa May.

Her deal was rejected by 149 votes and in a ruling John Bercow cited a centuries-old convention which would not allow a new meaningful vote unless it is “substantially” different.

One solution could be to ask for a new Queens’ speech as to prorogue parliament.

Prorogation is the term for the formal ending of a parliamentary session and – in modern times – has usually been followed by the opening of a new session.

It was described, by the frontbencher as ‘not the way forward’.
