People in the UK are among the most depressed in the Western world, according to new research.

The UK ranked joint-seventh out of 25 developed countries for adults struggling with debilitating conditions, with everyday problems such as job dissatisfaction and money issues believed to be major causes.

According to the data from Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the UK has more than double the rates for conditions in countries such as Poland, Greece and Slovakia.

The research also found that women are more likely to report having issues such as depression to their doctor.

Levels of depression were also lower in people who went on to higher education.

The OECD report analysed data for 25 to 64 year olds, with 10 per cent of that age group in the UK found to have suffered from some sort of depression in 2014.

That compares with just four per cent of people in Italy, the Czech Republic, Greece, and Poland.

Andreas Schleicher, of the OECD, told the Daily Mail: “With higher levels of education you have so many more ways to participate in society.

“It could have something to do with the education itself, it could have something to do with employment – people with poor qualifications get the kind of jobs that really make you disaffected.”

Across the countries surveyed women were found to be more likely to report suffering with some sort of depression. In the UK, 11 per cent of women reported issues compared to just eight per cent of men.

Dr Cosmo Hallstrom, from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: “Depression is more common among people who are socially deprived.

“If you’re poor and uneducated and you live on the top of a high rise, without a partner and you’ve got children to care for, unsupported and on no money, then you’re more likely to be depressed than if you have a good lifestyle, a supportive family relationship and good education.”
