A popular lido has been forced to close as London basks in 26C heat.

Brockwell Lido in south London was targeted by vandals who threw items into the pool hours after events were held to mark its 80th anniversary.

The lido said it was shut because of a “poolside break-in” which damaged its alarm system.

Pictures from the site in Brockwell Park showed wooden benches and a gazebo in the water.

Brockwell Lido tweeted from its official account: “Due to vandalism that has damaged pool panic/safety alarms the pool is currently closed.

“We have engineers on site rectifying and we are aiming to reopen as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience. We will update as soon as possible.”

The pool is a Grade II listed landmark and first opened in 1937.

London was forecast to bask in more hot weather on Sunday before temperatures drop next week.
