The Buckingham Palace attacker “reached for a 4ft sword” before officers arrested him, the Met Police have said.

Counter-terror police have launched an investigation after officers were injured as they swooped in to detain a knifeman near the royal home on Friday evening.

The man, who it has now emerged was a 26-year-old from Luton, stopped his car in a restricted area of the Mall.

Two officers who were patrolling the area spotted a large knife in the car and tried to arrest the suspected attacker, Scotland Yard said.
