A ‘disgruntled employee’ has shot one person and is holding hostages in a restaurant in Charleston, US authorities have said.

Mayor John Tecklenburg told reporters at a news conference that the shooting at the Virginia’s restaurant was not an act of terrorism or racism.

A section of King Street, in the city’s central commercial district, has been closed off by police.

Police are treating the incident as an active hostage situation.

Local media reported that diners from the restaurant said a man entered with a pistol saying “I am the new king of Charleston”.

Another witness claimed the shooter said “There’s a new boss in town.”

The city’s mayor John Tecklenburg said he was likely a “disgruntled employee, adding: “This was not an act of terrorism, This was not a hate crime.”

Images have emerged showing bomb squad members and SWAT team officers at the scene.
