The 2017 Canadian National Exhibition kicked-off Friday morning with increased security in place after the attacks in Spain.

CNE chief executive officer Virginia Ludy said visitors to the event will notice the exterior of the exhibition grounds have been “hardened” to prevent attacks similar to those the van attack which killed 13 and injured 100 in Spain on Thursday.

“The CNE has a robust security plan that is based on risk assessment and partnership,” Ludy said in a statement.

“As part of our comprehensive security plan, we have taken steps to secure our perimeter and grounds and to monitor, control and restrict vehicle access to our site.”

More to come.
