A Tory MP has been accused of racism in a bizarre Twitter spat with comedian Matt Lucas.

Welsh politician David Davies was accused of being “fascistic” after comments he made slamming a senior Met officer for suggesting police should prioritise non-English speaking victims of crime for personal visits from officers.

Mr Davies, the MP for English-bordering Welsh constituency Monmouth, said: “Appalling and discriminatory suggestion. Police could save fortune by not paying for interpreters for non-English speakers”.

The bizarre exchange kicked off after Little Britain star Mr Lucas responded to the MP’s tweet, saying: “Fortunately we don’t need a translator to tell us how fascistic this sounds.”

Mr Davies replied: “Highlighting cost of interpreters for ppl who don’t speak English isn’t fascism.”

His remarks turned personal when he added: “U may b funny but u aren’t much of a historian.”

London-born Mr Lucas replied: “And you can’t f****** spell, you tool” before Mr Davies hit back with: “Lefty luvvie comedian without a clue about the real world.”

The tiff continued as Mr Lucas, who is best known for his work with David Walliams, called the Conservative backbencher a “racist MP”.

Mr Davies responded: “You havnt got a clue you moron” before adding: “You happily ‘blacked up’ for a sketch then accuse others of ‘racism’. 1 rule 4 lefty comedian & 1 rule 4 everyone else eh? Moron”.

Mr Davies, who has held his seat in Monmouth since 2005, was initially referring to remarks made by Met deputy commissioner Craig Mackey.

The senior police official last week said that some members of the public could be prioritised for personal police visits if they are more vulnerable.

Mr Mackey added victims of crime who might be prioritised could include people with learning difficulties, the elderly and people who did not speak English as their first language.
