A young man suffered life-threatening injuries after being stabbed in the neck in front of horrified tourists in Covent Garden.

Officers were called to the assault in alleyway next to the English National Opera in St Martin’s Lane at 2.20pm on Wednesday.

Surrounding shops and bars were evacuated before the suspected knifeman was detained outside a nearby bagel shop.

The shirtless victim, believed to be in his 20s, was stripped to his underwear and given first aid on a stretcher before being taken to hospital.

A pub manager said: “We had to close urgently and police wouldn’t tell us anything that was going on. We put the shutters up and saw the ambulance arrive.”

Police have arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. Scotland Yard said the two men were known to each other.
