Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka appeared to replace the US president at a meeting of world leaders at the G20 summit.

A photograph has emerged on social media showing Ms Trump sat next to Prime Minister Theresa May and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel also in the shot.

The picture from the Hamburg summit has provoked outrage on social media, with people across the world taking to Twitter

It was posted by a Russian G20 official, who wrote she had replaced her father “as he leaves for bilateral meetings”.

The meeting, which took place on Saturday morning, was on the subject of Africa, health and migration and and was introduced by the leaders of South Africa, Italy and Turkey.

LSE Fellow Brian Klass quoted the tweet, referencing an interview Ms Trump had with Fox News last month, in which she claimed “I try to stay out of politics”.

He added: “Ivanka Trump, unelected, unqualified, daughterinchief, is representing the US at the G20 summit next to May, Xi.”

Colin Talbot, a professor of Government at Cambridge and Manchester universities, added: “Ivanka Trump “sits in” for Dad at G20 Summit. Words fail me.”

A spokesman for Ms Trump told Bloomberg she had been sitting in the back of the room and then briefly joined the main table when the president stepped out.

Ms Trump has been in an official, yet unpaid, advisory position to the President.

She stepped away from running her fashion brand earlier this year to take on the White House role.
