Motorists were today warned to expect disruption across north London when a key section of the North Circular Road is closed over three weekends next month.

Traffic will be diverted via the M25 when the Staples Corner flyover, which carries the A406 over the A5 and  junction 1 of the M1, is shut for essential repairs.

Transport for London predicts the impact will extend from the Chiswick roundabout to the edge of Walthamstow.

The area also includes a busy interchange for drivers heading to and from Brent Cross shopping  centre and Wembley stadium.

The flyover will be closed in both directions between 10pm on Friday September 1 and 5am on Monday September 4, at the same times the following weekend, and from midnight until 23.59pm on Sunday September 17.

The closures, from the junction with Waterloo Road to just beyond Brent Cross, are for replacement of  two 22-metre steel expansion joints.

The joints, to cope with temperature changes, were repaired 11 years ago but are now in poor condition.

TfL says it has to replace them to avoid longer-term disruption. It said part-closures were considered but that would have taken 50 days. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses.

In addition, preparation work means the flyover will be cut to one lane in each direction for four consecutive nights from 10pm to 5am from Monday August 28.

It will also shut eastbound on Monday September 18 from 10pm-5am, and westbound from 10pm- 5am on Wednesday September 20.
