A huge fire has torn though a residential tower block in Dubai, sending terrified residents fleeing from the building.

Video footage has emerged showing the blaze spreading up the 82-storey Torch Tower – one of the world’s tallest buildings – in the luxury Dubai Marina area popular with expats.

Flaming debris was seen falling down the the side of the building sparking fires on the streets below.

Dubai police cordoned off several streets around the building to keep people away as crowds of shocked locals gathered.

Witness John O’Nolan wrote on Twitter: “Fire in Dubai marina getting bigger and spreading up building. Lot of debris.”

He said the fire grew “very, very fast” and “spread all over the tower in multiple places”.

Authorities said the building was “successfully evacuated” and the fire, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, was brought under control.

After the flames were put out, Dubai’s official media office shared a photo of the charred and blackened tower, adding that: “Cooling operations are underway.”

No injuries have been reported and it is not clear what caused the fire.

The government said it is now working on providing shelter for those affected.

It is the second time in two years the building has gone up in flames, after it was damaged by a fire in 2015.
