At least 11 people have been crushed to death by a falling tree during a religious festival on the island of Madeira.

Local newspapers have reported 11 fatalities in the horror incident involving Christians at the Festa da Senhora do Monte, which attracts visitors from around the world.

It is thought the tree fell on people who were queuing to buy candles to celebrate the festival.

The exact number of casualties is not clear, although reports suggest as many as 35 people may have suffered serious injuries.
