More than a month after announcing a public inquiry into Elizabeth Wettlaufer’s crimes, the province has appointed a commissioner to lead it.

Justice Eileen Gillese, an Ontario Court of Appeal judge and former Western University dean and professor of law, will lead the public inquiry.

The final report and recommendations will be presented to the Attorney General by July 31, 2019.

Gillese will be looking at the policies, procedures and oversight of long-term care homes, the government said in a statement Tuesday.

She will review accountability measures and make sure they match legislative benchmarks. The inquiry will also provide recommendations to improve the safety of residents.

In June, Wettlaufer pleaded guilty to murdering eight elderly residents at two nursing homes between 2007 and 2014 and for harming six others. She was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

She’s the worst health-care serial killer in Canadian history.

“The inquiry will help get answers to make sure a tragedy like this never happens again,” the Ministry of the Attorney General said in a statement.
