Erith fire: Thick smoke billows into sky as 72 firefighters tackle scrapyard blaze

Thick black smoke billowed into the sky as 72 firefighters tackled a huge blaze at a scrapyard in south-east London.

Emergency services raced to the scene of the fire near Erith Marshes on Friday afternoon after dozens of 999 calls from witnesses.

About half the yard was alight and 40 people were forced to leave a nearby premises as a precaution, London Fire Brigade said.

Images and video posted on social media showed huge plumes of smoke rising from the site of the fire.

Ten fire engines from Erith, Bexley, Plumstead, East Greenwich and Eltham fire stations were at the scene in Landau Way.

LFB were alerted to the fire at 5.35pm.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
