When three teenage girls from east London fled the UK for a life under Islamic State they probably envisaged that would be their future, for good.

Four years later the caliphate is crumbling and a request by one of them to return to the UK has been met with more questions than answers.

Shamima Begum, who is heavily pregnant, wants to come home and the father of one of the friends she disappeared with has begged for them to be forgiven for “making a mistake”.

The government has responded saying “actions have consequences” and warned it’s worrying that the 19-year-old is showing no sign of regret.
