Finland stabbings: Two dead and six injured after attack in city of Turku

Two people have been killed and six others were injured in a stabbing incident in the western Finnish city of Turku, police said.

A suspect is in custody and being treated in hospital after officers shot him.

Shortly before 4pm, police said they were still hunting further potential suspects.

Broadcaster YLE said several people were thought to be injured after the incident happened in the Puutori-Market Square area of the south-west Finnish city.

The tabloid Ilta-Sanomat said six people were injured, one man and five women, and that a woman with a buggy was attacked by a man with a large knife.

The suspect is said to have been detained after being shot in the leg.

Around 4:40 pm, South-West Finland police said on Twitter: “Several people stabbed in central Turku. People are requested to avoid the city centre.”
