Tributes have been paid today to a “gracious and devoted” interpreter for the deaf who died in hospital a month after being hit by a competitor in the RideLondon cycling event.

Diana Barimore, 67, is said to have been taking her “beloved” dog Bertie for a walk when she was struck.

The freelance lip-speaker, an interpreter trained to be easily lip-read, suffered critical head injuries in the crash, at the junction of New King’s Road and Guion Road, a few hundred yards from her home in Fulham. She died in hospital on August 31.

Judith Millard wrote on Facebook: “I have lost a very dear cousin — she lost her battle with the awful injuries she sustained in a road accident. We all miss her greatly.”

The Association of Lipspeakers said: “Diana leaves behind a huge and irreplaceable chasm. A complete tragedy that is so very hard to comprehend. Diana you will truly be missed.”

Lesley Weatherson, of Lipspeaker UK, added: “Diana was dedicated to her work. She worked long days often travelling great distances to make sure the job was covered.

“Stories of her beloved dog Bertie made his life seem so vivid to any listener, she cherished him.”

A neighbour and close friend today described her as “funny, intelligent and feisty” and well liked in the community in Fulham.

Marcela Vielman, 37, has been taking care of Mrs Barimore’s dog since the tragedy. She said: “She was just an amazing person, really unique. She liked fashion and wore bright lipstick and dyed her hair, she was fun.”

The cyclist, a man in his sixties, suffered minor injuries but has since been discharged from hospital following the crash at noon on July 30.

Hugh Brasher, event director of RideLondon, said: “The organisers and everyone involved with RideLondon would like to express our sincere condolences.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 0208 543 5157, or the police 101 non-emergency number.
