Michael Matthews won stage 16 of the Tour de France in a photo finish, as Britain’s Chris Froome retained the leader’s yellow jersey, whilst Ireland’s Dan Martin loses time.

A relatively flat 165km stage came alive in the last few kilometres as crosswinds caused splits in the peloton before Matthews narrowly beat Norway’s Edvald Boasson Hagen.

Five-time stage winner Marcel Kittel was dropped early on a bad day for his Quick-Step team after team-mate Dan Martin lost time on the leaders.

Froome retains an 18 second lead over Italy’s Fabio Aru and 23 seconds over France’s Romain Bardet with five stages remaining.
