These shocking pictures reveal the full extent of the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Irma as the deadly superstorm slammed into Florida.

Boats are seen bobbing in extreme wind and rain in Miami harbour while, further west, residents took refuge in the Germain Arena, Estero.

Firefighters were shown evacuating elderly residents to safety in schools that threw open their classrooms and corridors as storm shelters.

Four people have died in Florida as a result of car crashes caused by the storm, which shifted its way westward threatening to hit Tampa hard.

The category four hurricane ripped through the Caribbean over the course of six days last week, leaving at least 25 people dead and a trail of devastation in its wake.
