A teenage girl has been killed and four people seriously injured after a car ploughed into diners outside a pizza restaurant in France.

French police said a driver slammed his car into a dining area outside Pizzeria Cesane in a small town 40 miles east of Paris on Monday night.

A 13-year-old girl died at the scene and her younger brother is in a critical condition in hospital, police said.

Four other people are said to have been seriously injured while eight people suffered minor injuries in the attack during which the suspect “made no effort to brake”, according to police.

The 39-year-old driver, who told police that he was suicidal, was arrested soon after the incident in Sept-Sorts, a spokesman for the country’s Interior Ministry added.

The case has not been linked to terrorism.

Dramatic images posted on social media showed what appeared to be a silver BMW crashed into the wall of a shop.

The incident comes after an Algerian man drove his car into a group of French soldiers last week.

A truck attack in the French city of Nice left 86 people dead last year.

France remains in a state of emergency following a string of attacks in the country in recent months.

A teenager was shot dead on Paris’ Champs Elysee after brandishing a knife at a soldier in the French capital earlier this month.

In June, an Algerian student was shot after attempting to attack a police officer with a hammer near Notre Dame.

In March, a 39-year-old convicted criminal was shot dead during an attempted gun attack at Paris Orly airport.

Ziyed Ben Belgacem wrestled a gun from a soldier before fleeing into a McDonald’s restaurant.

Another man was shot after trying to storm the city’s Louvre art gallery in February.
