Incredible images show two million Muslims gathering at Mount Arafat for the most important day of the Hajj pilgrimage.

Dressed in white, a massive crowd from more than 160 countries congregated near Saudi Arabia’s Mecca for the second day of the annual pilgrimage.

They will remain on the surrounding Mount Arafat plain and the hill from dusk until dawn.

They could be seen climbing up the sides of the hill and praying on rocks in an effort to start anew, erase past sins and beg God for forgiveness and guidance.

The pilgrimage, seen as one of the five pillars of Islam – which every adult Muslim are expected perform at least once in their lives – started at sunset on Wednesday.

Pilgrims spend five days praying, both in Mecca and the surrounding desert.

Arafat is the site where Muslims believe the Prophet Mohammed gave his last sermon to his followers about 14 centuries ago.
