The weather in Chatham-Kent, as well as the rest of Southwestern Ontario, has been ideal for most of this summer, with many people taking advantage.

And it is a trend that appears will continue, according to Environment Canada.

“It’s been a Goldilocks summer so far,” said Peter Kimbell, warning preparedness meteorologist, on Wednesday. “It’s been just about right.”

Temperatures have been hot, hovering around the 30 C mark, but without the oppressive humidity for the most part.

“This year is cooler,” Kimbell said. “That’s definitely been felt in the number of hot days.”

He added that in terms of the mean temperature, which is 21 C, the area isn’t too far below the normal value of 21.5 C. Last year, it was 21.8 C.

“The sun is hot regardless. Even in a cooler summer you’re going to get a lot of warm days,” he said.

As far as precipitation, Kimbell said that 34 millimetres fell this month, with the normal at 93 millimetres.

“It’s been dryish so far, but of course the month is not over yet,” he said. “We do expect more rain in the next few days.

“June was definitely dry, with about half as much rain as usual … 44 millimetres in June, compared to 82 millimetres normally. May of course was extraordinarily wet at 145 millimetres.”

For Chatham-Kent, there is a 30 to 40-per-cent chance of rain each of the days from Thursday until Monday, with the possibility of thunderstorms.

Despite the wet weather predicted for the near future, Kimbell said residents can expect much of what has been seen this summer.

“The jet stream is pretty well normal,” he said. “There’s no indication there’s going to be a big heat wave. Temperatures will be on the warm side, but probably not by much.

“Enjoy it while it lasts. It won’t be very long before the kids will be going back to school. The weather changes fast by the time September rolls around.”
