A controlling and jealous man who repeatedly beat his girlfriend over the head with a ceramic frying pan after she texted someone else has been jailed.

Hugh Nelson, 53, grew into a manic rage when he realised his partner had texted someone else in the middle of the night.

Demanding to know who she had messaged, furious Nelson, of Mayfield Road in Hornsey, pinned her to the ground and hit her with the pan more than 20 times before stamping on her legs and ankles.

He then fled, leaving the 35-year-old victim bleeding and swollen. She was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.

The brutal assault happened on Sunday, March 12 at around 5.30am.

Police arrested Nelson the following day and later discovered he had attacked the victim two other times in the past.

Nelson was found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday, July 24 and jailed for six years for GBH in relation to the most recent attack. He was also given a prison sentence of eight months for the other two offences, which will be served concurrently.

DS Robert Brown from Tower Hamlets said: “Nelson proudly exhibited many of the signs of a highly successful life whilst hiding a violent, abusive and controlling character.

“He behaved savagely towards his long term partner on a regular basis for many years, she has been left traumatised by the experience but I hope this sentence goes some small way to aiding her recovery.”
