Jeremy Hunt: President Assad will be in power ‘for a while’ due to Russian support

In a way it was just a statement of the obvious. That after years of fighting a brutal civil war, President Assad is not going anywhere.

But the Foreign Secretary’s signal – to Sky News – that Britain is resigned to Syria’s leader staying in power, is still a significant moment.

Jeremy Hunt told our Foreign Affairs Editor that Russia’s support has kept Assad in office and that Moscow now has a “sphere of influence” in the region.

Mr Hunt is on a tour of the far east and spoke exclusively to Deborah Haynes in Singapore.
