The family of a schoolboy stabbed  to death by attackers armed with a samurai sword today begged teenagers to lay down their knives.

Aspiring architect Jermaine Goupall, 15, was killed in the street in Thornton Heath, less than 100 yards from his home, after an evening with friends at a cinema and restaurant. The group were ambushed by masked thugs who stabbed Jermaine and fled. Paramedics attended but he was pronounced dead an hour later at midnight yesterday.

Police have yet to establish a motive for the attack. Jermaine is the 15th teenager fatally stabbed in London this year. His family said he was a talented mathematician, played badminton and rugby and was an “excellent” swimmer.

His sister Tilisha, 25, said: “The level of knife crime is so terrible with young boys and girls carrying blades. I warned Jermaine not to become another  statistic… we are heartbroken. It could happen to any young person. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

She added: “These young people need to stop carrying knives. I have lost friends because of this knife crime and now my brother.”

Jermaine’s father, Stanley Goupall, 50, an electrician who runs his own business, said: “I want the perpetrators to know what a lovely boy my son was. He was special he was adored by his family, friends and the community.”

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as a single stab wound.

One resident said: “I heard someone screaming ‘help, help’. I ran over and by the time I got there his cries had stopped, he was conscious but looked to be slipping away. It was a horrendous thing to see.”

Witnesses should call 020 8721 4868 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
