The Chinese national who drunkenly plowed his SUV into the car of a Free Press carrier was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday morning.

Jinghao Zhou, 24, had pleaded guilty last month to impaired driving causing death and to two immigration charges for using fake immigration papers in connection with the early-morning crash in north London on Nov. 24, 2016.

Killed was Gloria Chivers, 60, a longtime Free Press employee and beloved newspaper carrier in Thorndale.

In his decision, Ontario Court Justice Thomas McKay said he believed Zhou was remorseful but called the driving “outrageous” and the crash “horrific.”

Zhou had as much as 240 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, which would be three times the legal limit of .08%. He was driving at 188 km/h when he slammed into Chivers’ car.

There was no evidence of braking as he raced through the red light at Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street.

The impaired driving causing death conviction garnered a six-year term. McKay said a strong message about the dangers of impaired driving has to be sent to the community “given the consequences of his actions and the terrible toll that impaired drivers extract on our society.”

Another year was added for the phony immigration papers he had purchased through an Internet chat room.
