Broadcaster John Oliver has slammed Donald Trump’s failure to condemn white supremacists in an angry tirade after neo-Nazis sparked violence in Charlottesville.

On his satirical news show Last Week Tonight, Mr Oliver said: “(White nationalist) David Duke and the Nazis really seem to like Donald Trump, which is weird because Nazis are a lot like cats – if they like you it’s probably because you’re feeding them.

He added: “Also cats are like Nazis, but that’s a whole different subject.”

Mr Oliver used the HBO Sunday night show to criticise Mr Trump’s response to the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, who was mown down in Charlottesville as she attended an anti-fascism protest.

Nineteen people were injured in the violence sparked by neo-Nazis over the weekend.

Oliver said: “There is clearly no point waiting for leadership from our president in moments like this, because it is just not coming, which means we will have to look to one another – because incredibly, in a country where previous presidents have actually had to defeat Nazis, we now have one who cannot even be bothered to f****** condemn them.”

He went on: “What kind of f****** idiot would not immediately distance himself from them?

“It simply doesn’t get easier than disavowing Nazis. It’s almost as much of a presidential gimme as pardoning a f****** turkey.”

The British TV show host lives in the US and became famous for his skits on American satirical news programme The Daily Show before starting his own series.

Responding to Mr Trump’s remark that he condemned violence “on many sides”, Mr Oliver said: “On many sides? This was a white nationalist rally. You have to call that out by name.

“There really aren’t many instances in modern American politics where you can honestly think, ‘That guy really should have mentioned the Nazis.’

“But this is emphatically one of them.

“It’s like a reverse Godwin’s law – if you fail to mention Nazism, you lose the argument.”

He added that the US president had had several opportunities to condemn white nationalism.

“But of course not,” said Mr Oliver, adding: “He had one last shot before the buzzer on the racism clock hit zero and he threw an airball so far away it landed in the Third Reich.

Mr Oliver also pointed out that white nationalist site the Daily Stormer praised Mr Trump’s apparent refusal to condemn the extreme right.

“’No condemnation at all. When asked to condemn, he just walked out of the room. Really, really good. God bless him,” they wrote.

Mr Oliver joked that God has now spoken out to condemn the white nationalists and deny any connection with them.

The White House has released a statement to say that Mr Trump “condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred, and of course that includes white Supremacists, KKK, neo-nazi and all extremist groups”.
