British actress Laila Rouass has told how she hid in a restaurant freezer during the Barcelona terror attack.
Ms Rouass, who has starred in Spooks, Holby City and Footballer’s Wives as well as competing on Strictly Come Dancing, wrote on Twitter that she had been caught up in the atrocity that left more than a dozen people dead.
“In the middle of the attack. Hiding in a restaurant freezer. Happened so fast. Praying for the safety of everyone here,” she tweeted.
Ms Rouass, who is engaged to snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan, then told of hearing gunshots.
“Gunshots just heard. Armed police running down (the) street looking for someone,” she wrote.
She then tweeted a video of a police helicopter hovering above, and said the whole of the area was “in lock down with armed police everywhere”.
She later thanked restaurant staff for their actions.
“Thank you to the staff at the restaurant for staying calm and keeping us safe. I love you Barcelona,” she wrote.
Thirteen people were killed and 80 injured when a van ploughed into pedestrians on Thursday afternoon.
The Catalonian government confirmed the death toll following the rampage in Las Ramblas – the city’s busiest shopping street – around 5pm (local time).
Dramatic images posted on social media showed armed police swarm the historic tree-lined street popular with tourists.
Initial reports that two terrorists were holed up in a restaurant with hostages were dismissed by officials late on Thursday.
At least 15 of the injured victims are believed to be in a serious condition after the van mounted the pavement and swerved into a busy pedestrian area, a spokesman added.
One Belgian is among the dead, officials said and one Greek national has been seriously injured.
Three suspects have been arrested over the incident which police described as a “terrorist attack with the aim of killing as many people as possible”.
Five terrorists wearing suicide belts who were planning a second atrocity in Spain overnight were then shot dead by police.
The men rammed civilians with a car in Spanish seaside town Cambrils before being gunned down in the small hours of this morning.
Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the violence.
