Sky’s Faisal Islam looks at a possible solution to customs in Northern Ireland as he visits one area being used for livestock checks.

The facility in Larne, which is run by 14 people, matters in the final stage of a Brexit deal.

European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier references the facility: “Obviously in the future the island of Ireland will remain and must remain a single epidemiologic area, obviously.

“Such checks already exist in the port of Larne and Belfast.

“However they would have to cover 100% rather than 10% of live animals and animal-derived products, which would involve a significant change in terms of scale.”

The town is a DUP stronghold and its MP is the uncompromising hardliner Sammy Wilson, also the DUP’s spokesman.

A Northern Ireland port town of just 20,000, and yet for centuries on a key trading route.

Larne is Brexit in microcosm.
