Overpasses needed

Regarding the article Pedestrians hurt in crash near Western (Sept. 11).

When I read the headline about pedestrians being hit near Western University, my first guess was this happened at Western and Sarnia roads. The city needs to think about replacing pedestrian crossings at this intersection with overpasses.

This intersection separates areas where many students live, and where they attend classes, so it’s heavily used. They crowd the corners and they cross when they shouldn’t, making left and right turns nearly impossible. An overpass also would help alleviate the congestion on Western Road, which can back up all the way back to Windermere Road.

Teachers not all full-time

Regarding the article Fanshawe turns 50 (Sept. 9).

In the articles I see a glaring omission. The public deserves to know why only 80 per cent of college teachers are employed full-time. This indicates Fanshawe teachers are not valued, and thus the students and their education are not valued.

A full-time education means having a full-time teacher.

More warning, please

Regarding the article Fostering a merging consensus (Sept. 8) about research into merging in traffic.

I believe accidents happen because of no advanced lane-closure signs. The driver in the closed lane suddenly notices his lane is ending and this causes a quick, poor lane change.

When I drive, my main thought is not to stop frequently.

Why not do a study with all closed lanes announced ahead of the closure — the higher the speed the farther ahead — and compare the results?

The zipper method would cause frustration with all the backup waiting for each car ahead to find someone willing to let them in. The zipper can be used with moving traffic. Merging into traffic should be stressed more in driving lessons and tests.

How many times have you seen people waiting when they could have merged into traffic?
