Regarding the article 30% council raise won’t pay, councillor argues (Aug. 17).
When seeking salary increases, why do civil servants keep comparing themselves to other cities? Be it the police, fire personnel or city councillors, what makes them think they deserve comparable wages? I think any increase in pay should be on merit since some do a really good job and some don’t.
Are our city councillors worth a 30 per cent increase in salaries? I don’t think so. It’s a part-time job for which they are amply paid with tax breaks. Maybe they should try working for minimum wage for a comparison rather than what other cities are being paid.

No proof of creator
Ron Pope, in his letter Sounds like a creator (Aug. 17) may find it “extraordinary” that eclipses can be predicted “down to the second,” but it’s been done for a few hundred years and just requires observations and math.
Rather than stating his beliefs unequivocally, he offers only a rhetorical question. Well, Ron, the answer to it is “no.” It’s very easy to cherry-pick a few benign things as “proof” of a creator, while conveniently forgetting about things like cancer, terrorism, earthquakes and Donald Trump.
If you’re going to claim that an occasional, temporary, predictable example of orbital mechanics is proof of a creator, then your designer should bear the full responsibility for all that’s wrong in the universe, too.
Funny how the “intelligent” design crowd never do that.
Trump era ending fast
This weeks dismal and pathetic response from U.S. President Donald Trump following the tragedy in Virginia signals the hard fast ending of the Trump era.
His ignorant vile comments tell me that his maximum term ends in 3 1/2 years at most and very likely sooner .
The only thing of significance is his loud and decisive dictate to North Korea, but everything else thus far seven months into his crazy administration has been terrible non-starters and ignorant loud noise towards others.
But then it’s been long known that empty vessels make the most noise.
