New downtown is north

If you really want to kill London’s downtown, which is happening as this prose hits the paper, then take away all the cars. Anything that makes people angry, such as taking away how they get there will help. Downtown is dying. There are only so many spots where people can go and that direction isn’t on the map anymore. Going a bit to the north is becoming the new downtown.

Proposed changes costly

Canada’s minister of finance is contemplating major changes to the incorporation options for small businesses. Unfortunately, these proposals were introduced during the summer when many Canadians were preoccupied with family commitments. The public discussion time will end soon and the lives of many small business owners and their employees may be in jeopardy if incorporation legislation is amended as proposed. If there are business owners who have abused the current legislation, the Canada Revenue Agency should be given the tools to address those specific cases. All other small, incorporated businesses should be encouraged to grow and thus provide more employment opportunities.

Teach, don’t preach

I am increasingly dismayed by the holier than thou attitude of individuals and groups lobbying for removal of names, statues and plaques of those they consider to have led less-than-perfect lives.

If it were not for the efforts of Sir John A. Macdonald and the many others like him, we would not be enjoying the quality of life we have here in Canada, a country that is envied around the world.

None of us is perfect.

But why not use this time in what educators refer to as a “teachable moment” as an opportunity to enlighten our citizens about the accomplishments of these great men and women, along with their foibles, remembering the times in which they lived.

To quote a great teacher, “Let he who is without sin throw the first stone.”
