The London Beefeaters need some early wins to stay afloat in the Ontario Football Conference this year.

The got their first one, in part thanks to a dominant fourth quarter, in their 2017 season-opening 23-10 victory over the GTA Grizzlies in Etobicoke Sunday.

Beefs running back Nick Hauser rushed for a game-high 78 yards on 13 carries, including a three-yard touchdown to seal the win in the dying minutes.

The London defence held the Grizzlies to just 154 yards of offence (31 of those in the second half), recovered a GTA fumble and registered two interceptions by Isaiah Johns and Spencer Bollman.

Beefs kicker Quinn Johnson’s punting consistently pinned GTA deep in their own end, resulting in four conceded safeties and eight points.

Rookie quarterback Clarke McCallum threw 17-for-22 and 175 yards, with a second-quarter touchdown pass to Kennedy Magee and two interceptions. Hayden Amis caught 10 balls for 109 yards.

The Beefs play their home opener against the Niagara Raiders Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at TD Stadium.
