City hall’s longtime human-resources boss may be gone, The Free Press has learned.

An email was sent to city hall staff Tuesday afternoon announcing Bill Coxhead, London director of recreation, is now the HR head – raising questions about the status of Veronica McAlea Major.

The email, sent by top manager Martin Hayward, makes no mention of McAlea Major, sources say.

A lawyer by trade, McAlea Major has enjoyed a long career at London city hall. She was a close ally of Art Zuidema, who served as city manager until his exit this winter.

Politicians on this council and previous ones have quietly clashed with McAlea Major and quietly grumbled about her department.

City hall unions also took umbrage with her. A hardline stance in union negotiations –applauded by some taxpayers – drew the ire of firefighters and city hall’s inside workers, for example.

Under Hayward, city hall appears to have taken a more cordial approach to labour talks.

McAlea Major made about $188,000 last year, per Ontario’s so-called Sunshine List of public-sector salaries.

A message left on McAlea Major’s cellphone seeking comment hasn’t been returned as of Tuesday afternoon.
