London soccer teams will show up in force for this weekend’s Ontario Cup semifinals and finals.

It’s been a sparse gathering of London soccer teams deep in Ontario Cup playdowns in recent years. But this year there will be 10 London teams participating in the semifinals, including two in the Masters division or over-35 division.

Apollo FC first entered the over-35 Ontario Cup five years ago and made it to the final before losing. Saturday they’ll play Woodbridge Italia in one semifinal.

Apollo got to the semifinals by defeating two-time champion Scarborough Wexford, a team with former Toronto FC and national team player Dwayne De Rosario in its lineup.

That semifinal game will be played at Birchmount Stadium in Toronto on Saturday.

The other semifinal will feature another London United Nations, a team lead by player-coach Andrew Loague. They’ll play Mississauga.

The two winners will play Sunday in the Ontario Cup final.

At 3 p.m. Sunday at Birchmount, London Marconi Azzurri women’s masters will play the winner of the semifinal between Grand River Rangers and Ottawa City Soccer Over 30’s.

The other London playoff teams represent minor-age soccer teams with the semifinals being played on the weekend at various locations.

Saturday will start with the U13 boys’ semifinal, London Youth Whitecaps Blue take on North York at 1 p.m. at University of Guelph.

The U14 London Youth Whitecaps 03 girls will play Niagara-on-the-Lake Rangers at 1 p.m., at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.

The U15 boys Tier 1 division will feature the London Youth Whitecaps Blue taking on Toronto York Jets at 11 a.m. at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

The U16 girls division might see an eventual meeting of two London teams in the final. The semifinals will see London Youth Whitecaps playing Woolwich Wolfpack at 3 p.m. at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. That will be followed at 5 p.m. by the London NorWest Strikers taking on Glen Shields FC 2001 at 5 p.m., also at the Hershey Centre.

Sunday will see another slew of semifinal games played.

In U17 girls’ play London Youth Whitecaps 00 and Saltfleet Stoney Creek 2000 Red will play at 1 p.m. at the Hershey Centre.

London Marconi senior women will play Durham United at 11 a.m. at University of Guelph.

Other area teams will also be participating on Ontario Cup playdowns. The U15 Chatham Strikers girls team will play a semifinal game against Kitchener Academy at 3 p.m. Saturday at University of Guelph.

In the same division, Sarnia Spirit is still in the quarterfinals. They’ll play Woodbridge Saturday at the University of Guelph hoping to move on to the other semifinal on Sunday.
