Londoners have been told to brace for thundery showers as summer becomes a distant memory this weekend.

Miserable weather is set to hit South East England over the next 48 hours and high winds will sweep across other parts of the country, forecasters said.

The Met Office said Londoners faced “sunny spells and scattered heavy showers, possibly thundery” and predicted temperatures would peak at around 17C.

Heavy rain is expected to be at its worst on Saturday afternoon before clouds clear to make way for a dry but cool evening.

Of Sunday, the forecaster said: “A mainly dry, sometimes sunny morning, but thickening cloud will bring occasional rain during the afternoon, then mainly dry again later in the evening.

“Southwesterly winds becoming fresh, locally strong. Maximum temperature 17 C.”

Elsewhere in the UK, 50mph gusts of wind are forecast, posing a danger of falling trees and disruption in the North East and South West.

Come Monday Londoners will also face high winds with yet more blustery showers and the possibility of gales.
