Three early morning rush hour crashes caused the M2 in Kent to close in both directions.

Two trucks crashed in a “serious collision” on the motorway, and three vehicles were involved in a crash on the London-bound carriageway.

A car heading towards the coast also hit the central reservation at about 6.50am on Monday.

The road has been closed between junctions five and six for Sittingbourne and Faversham, and chaos on the roads was expected to continue.

Kent Police had warned the M2 was not expected to reopen for several hours.

It was not immediately known whether there were injuries.

The force later said both junctions on the London-bound carriageway were reopened at about 10am.

It tweeted: “The London-bound carriageway of the #M2 between Junctions 5 and 6 is now open following an earlier collision. Many thanks for your patience.

“The coastbound carriageway of the #M2 between Junctions 6 and 5 remains closed following a serious collision involving two trucks.”
