A runaway horse on the M25 had to be put down after it was hit by a lorry.

Highways England issued a warning this morning that a horse was spotted on a grass verge near the exit for Swanley at junction 3.

Motorists were delayed for hours as they sat in a gridlock as far as junction 4 at Badgers Mount whilst authorities tried to rescue the horse.

But the animal was later struck by a lorry and suffered a broken leg.

A vet rushed to the scene to treat the animal but it was put down because its injuries were too severe.

Officers said the HGV driver is shaken but is otherwise unhurt.
