French police have reportedly arrested a man over the disappearance of a nine-year-old girl who went missing from a wedding in the Alps.

The man was said to be near the venue at the time of the wedding, according AFP news agency.

Maëlys has not been seen since around 3am on Sunday when her parents and sister, 12, reported her missing from the party in Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin, some 25 miles west of Chambery.

She was dressed in a white party dress and was playing with children in her bare feet before she went missing.

It was initially thought she had fallen asleep somewhere after a game of hide and seek. Dogs sniffed a toy used by Maelys last week but could only pick up her scent as far as the car park of the hall where the party took place.

“This has raised the possibility that she was put in a car and driven away,” said police chief Yves Marzin.

“Extensive searches are taking place throughout the town, and in surrounding woodland. Beaters are checking long grass, bushes, and all other parts of the wood, including waterways.”

Prosecutor Dietlind Baudoin, who is leading the enquiry, said more than 150 of the 180 wedding guests had so far been interviewed, while the hall caretaker’s home was searched.

Phone records of those in the area on Saturday and Sunday morning are being examined.
