An extremely rare white moose has been captured on film after a three-year search for the majestic animal.

A local politician captured the spine-tingling footage of the bull moose, born white because of a recessive gene, in the Värmland region of south west Sweden.

Hans Nilsson, a municipal council-member, told Swedish radio network Sverige Radio that he had been trying to capture the moose for three years.

The elusive creature was finally captured plunging into a stream and then striding out again onto a grassy verge.

Despite the white velvety fur covering the moose from hoof to antler, the animal is not thought to have got its colouring from albinism, which would normally result in pink eyes.

It is thought to be piebald, a condition that usually produces small brown spots of fur on a white base coat.
