A man who accidentally picked up his girlfriend’s passport flew all the way to Germany before the error was discovered.

Michael Randall, 23, showed the wrong document at Gatwick Airport security, boarding an easyJet flight to Berlin with no problems.

This is despite the fact his girlfriend has long blonde hair and his is short and brown.

The McLaren Formula 1 team technician accidentally took the wrong ID when he left his home in Staines, Middlesex in the early hours of the morning.

It was not until he arrived at Berlin Schönefeld Airport that authorities were alerted to the fact he was using girlfriend Charlotte Bull’s passport.

He was then questioned for 90 minutes before eventually being granted a one-day visa to enter the city.

Mr Randall told the Mirror: “It’s outrageous I got that far. EasyJet are meant to check the name against the boarding pass but they obviously didn’t.

“It’s very worrying as I don’t even look like Charlotte.”

Ms Bull, 34, said: “It was a terrible breach of security, even more so considering how scary current times are.”

Mr Randall was travelling to Berlin to watch a motorbike race.

“The first I knew something was wrong was when I arrived at Berlin airport. I thought honesty was the best policy so I went and told security,” Mr Randall added.

A colleague who was travelling out to the same event later brought Michael’s passport so he could return home.

An easyJet spokesman told the Mirror the right passport details were entered online but “visual identification” on boarding should have spotted the mix-up.

He added: “We are investigating.”
