A pedestrian was struck and seriously injured by a car being chased by police in south London.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has opened an investigation into what it described as a “terrible incident”.

It said police had been pursuing a silver Toyota Corolla after it failed to stop at about 1.15pm last Thursday.  The car hit the pedestrian, a 26-year-old man,  at the junction of Clapham Common North Side and Forthbridge Road.

CCTV footage and data from the police car will be analysed as part of the investigation. Operations manager Catherine Hall said: “A young man has sustained very serious injuries in this terrible incident, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by it.

“Our investigation will examine the circumstances prior to the collision to determine whether appropriate policies and procedures were followed.

“The pursuit occurred in a busy area of south London in the middle of the day, and we ask anybody who saw what happened to get in touch with us.”

The man was in a critical condition in hospital today. Two boys, aged 16 and 17, were treated in hospital before being taken into custody.

Witnesses should contact the IPCC on 0800 096 9077.
